Education A spacious land of islands, forests and mountains, this is Maine, home to thriving industries and spectacular natural resources. As a state of abundant natural resources, Maine has developed a biotechnology industry predominantly centered around agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. Maine is, however, also home to a sector of successful businesses and prestigious institutions engaged in other life science applications. To ensure future prosperity, Maine’s economy is currently undergoing an aggressive and vast transformation. Goals include increasing science and technology research & development, stimulating investment and diversifying the economy, thereby redefining Maine as a powerful regional, national and international market. Maine is a national leader in K-12 education and is home to a comprehensive and modern state university system and several prestigious private institutions. From the towering White Mountains to a coastline dotted with hundreds of tiny islands, Maine’s geographic diversity creates a multitude of outdoor recreation options, while cities host numerous artistic and sporting events. Maine enjoys a modern transportation network via air, land and sea. Due to its large and strategic maritime location, Maine is an important transportation center for international markets. Maine is the largest and most northern New England state. Unique geography, from mountain ranges to islands to plateaus, and a northern location define Maine’s distinct seasons and varied climate. Before settlement by the Europeans, Maine was home to several indigenous tribes, including the Micmacs and the Abnakis. Permanent English settlements began to appear as early as the 1620s. Rapid population growth dictated rapid economic growth and several industries began to flourish. Lumber, fishing and farming were followed by a boom in granite and lime quarries, leather and textiles. The majority of Maine’s economy has since become a balance between the use of natural resources, such as fishing, and smaller manufacturing enterprises.
